Road conditions on the Barrier Beach can change with seasonal events and maintenance schedules. Check posted notices and BBCA alerts before traveling.
Annual Closures
There are two annual road closures that occur each year and the BBCA does our best to send out newsletter reminders to our residents about how these road closures may impact your travel to and from your homes. Other road closures may occur, and can be monitored on the NYS Department of Transportation website. The BBCA will do our best to notify the membership through the newsletter for any additional road closures. If you are aware of any upcoming impacts to travel, please share them with us so we can share the information with your neighbors
Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride – July
The annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride typically takes place on the third Friday of July. There are typically road closures from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Robert Moses southbound, from Sunrise Highway to Ocean Parkway, then west to Cedar Beach on Ocean Parkway. The eastbound lanes on Ocean Parkway are typically closed from Gilgo to Cedar Beach during that same time. It is typically possible for Oak Beach and Captree residents to exit the island via Robert Moses Parkway.
Suffolk County Marathon – October
The Suffolk County Marathon typically takes place on the third Sunday of October, and the northbound section of the Robert Moses Causeway is typically closed, from Captree State Park to 27A, from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can find more information here.

Seasonal Beach Traffic
The summer months bring plenty of mainlanders to our roads and creates congestion and traffic. At times, traffic pulling into our beaches can back up onto Ocean Pkwy and cause sudden stops and delays.
Always have your beach pass sticker on your car to avoid any issues entering the permit-required lots and advise guests of traffic if arriving during prime beach hours.
For our Gilgo Beach residents, always call the booth to inform them of your guests names and car model to ensure a smooth entry to the beach.
